Green day

Green Day is a punk rock trio formed in California in 1989 and consists of guitarist and singer Billie Joe Armstrong, bassist Mike Dirnt and drummer Tré Cool. Originally, the group is part of the punk scene in Berkeley, California. They accumulate concerts and sign a contract with the independent label Lookout! Records. Their second album Kerplunk attracts attention, and so they signed with major label Reprise Records in 1993. It is then they create the album Dookie in 1994 which won a huge success and became the group (then) "the greatest band in the world." The group, with others such as The Offspring and Rancid is also credited for having revived the commercial interest of punk in the world, influencing bands like Blink-182, Sum 41 and Good Charlotte. The group continues with the album Insomniac, Nimrod and Warning between 1995 and 2000. These albums do not achieve the commercial success of Dookie, but is still selling relatively well. In 2004 the band released the album American Idiot, which became a commercial and critical success, popularizing the group to a new generation.

Green Day has sold over 60 million albums worldwide, including 22 million in the United States. They have also garnered numerous awards including three Grammy Awards for Dookie, American Idiot and the song Boulevard of Broken Dreams.

The humble beginnings

At the age of 12 years, Tré Cool joined the band The Lookouts. The album quickly drew the attention and the young Tré began performing at the punk club in Berkeley, California, 924 Gilman Street. In turn, Armstrong (17) and Dirnt (17 years) formed the band Sweet Children in 1989, with Armstrong on vocals and guitar and Dirnt on bass and vocals. They began playing in 1988 at Rod's Hickory Pit in Rodeo, California. In 1989, the "Sweet Children" was renamed "Green Day" after a day spent smoking pot ( "Green Day"). They quickly added Al Sobrante (born John Kiftmeyer, drums) the group and seeking a recording contract.

With their first tour in the United States in 1988 and 1989, the band signed a contract this year with Lookout! Records, a punk label run by the leader of the band The Lookouts, Lawrence Livermore. They released the same time their first EPs 1,000 Hours, and Slappy 39/Smooth in 1990, with songs dealing primarily with love. Lawrence Livemore describes one of their concerts as worthy of a concert of "Beatles playing at Shea Stadium. The following year (1991), they produced the album 1,039 / Smoothed Out Slappy Hours, a compilation of their 3 EPs. Al Sobrante left when suddenly the group to go to university, and Tré Cool is hired as a temporary replacement. When Armstrong and Dirnt realize that Al Sobrante did not intend to be a member of the group, it is finally replaced by Tré Cool.

They then return to the studio to produce their second album, Kerplunk, in 1992, selling 50 000 copies in the United States, which is considered as much a punk album independent of the time. This attracts the attention of Reprise Records, and a series of tours at home and in Europe later, the band signed with Reprise in April 1993, leaving Lookout! friendly.

Dookie and success

Signing to Reprise circulated many critics among fans of punk who accuse the group of treason against their former independent punk scene. Armstrong later said he "could not get back to the punk scene, it became the biggest failure or great success." It is considered that this difficult and brutal rejection influence the band's career in the years after Dookie.

So in February 1994, and recorded in just 3 weeks, they released their first album on Reprise: Dookie. During 1994, the many passages on MTV videos of singles Longview and Basket Case are the album and group success, and this revival punk rock in the United States with the help of the album Smash by The Offspring ... And Out Come The Wolves Rancid, Stranger Than Fiction Bad Religion and Punk in Drublic by NOFX. Dookie was so popular that propels sales of their previous album Kerplunk, which goes platinum in the United States. Dookie covers topics such as anxiety (Basket Case), masturbation and boredom (Longview), love and jealousy (Pulling Teeth, Chump), bisexuality (Coming Clean) or the last group (Welcome To Paradise). Regarding the title of the album, the group wanted to appoint Liquid Dookie ( "Caca liquid") at first, but it seemed too adult, and it therefore they kept Dookie.

During the summer of 1994, Green Day joined the group list on the Lollapalooza festival and Woodstock in 1994. During the Green Day concert in Woodstock runs great battle of mud between group members and the public, which blew the band's profile and boost sales of the album. Anecdotally, bassist Mike Dirnt lost teeth and broke an arm in the melee, being dumped by a security guard who was mistaken for a member of the public. The latest single When I Come Around helps the album has to sell 10 million copies (diamond) in the United States and more than 15 million worldwide. Three of the five singles from Dookie reach first place in the charts (Longview, Basket Case, When I Come Around) while Welcome To Paradise reached the 7th place and She reached the 5th. The album itself reached the 2nd place, but still has far album of punk rock's best-selling history. Dookie also get a Grammy Award ( "Best Alternative Music Performance") and will collect the good reviews. Rolling Stone closes the album 193rd place in its list of 500 best albums in history and All Music Guide Dookie described as "a stellar piece of modern punk that many have copied but no one has surpassed. In addition, many groups reported having been influenced by the album, Sum 41, Blink-182, New Found Glory, Good Charlotte, Simple Plan, Yellowcard and Something Corporate.

Insomniac

In 1995, they recorded a single called JAR (from the soundtrack of the film Angus) that directly reaches the first place on the U.S. charts. They enchainenent with the album Insomniac, which appears in the fall of 1995. On the band after the album reflects the fatigue and anxiety that exists within the group because of their concerts too numerous, and this is why Insomniac shows a darker sound than its predecessor. They deal with topics such as drugs (Geek Stink Breath, Brain Stew), anxiety (Panic Song), disposition (Westbound Sign), and an attack aimed at their former punk scene that was released following the " commercial "Dookie, the song 86. The album sold 2 million copies in the United States and reached 2nd place in the singles charts with the Geek Stink Breath, Walking Contradiction, Stuck With Me, and especially Brain Stew / Jaded. They use a work of art titled "God Told Me To Skin You Alive" by Winston Smith for the album cover and entitle the album after a statement that even Smith. Nimrod

In 1997, their third major album, Nimrod, was released. The album differs from their other albums by a major concern for experimentation. But despite the success of Good Riddance (Time Of Your Life), the album does not really resonate with only 2 million records sold in the United States. The group then made a break to spend time with their new families.

Warning and other projects

So in 2000 out Warning. The sound of this album further deviates from that of Nimrod, with a sound and showing more positive development in the musical maturity of the group. This is greeted with mixed reaction from fans who were accustomed to the sound of pop punk Dookie, Insomniac and Nimrod. Similarly, the album is fairly welcomed by critics, receiving 3 / 5 stars from Rolling Stone, but still 4.5 / 5 stars from All Music Guide. The biggest hit is the song Warning Minority (the other being singles Warning, Waiting and Macy's Day Parade), but many innovators, the album does not reach the status of platinum in the United States for the first Once in the band's career, and Warning is declared a commercial flop. This gap in sales led many to question the future of Green Day, and a decline in popularity follows.

In 2001, Reprise released the best-of International Superhits! and International Supervideos! combining singles (International Superhits!) and video (International Supervideos!) group since Dookie. It often interprets these outputs as an attempt to Resume récussiter sales of Green Day and compensate the commercial failure of Warning. American Idiot and popularity found

After the fiasco of Warning, the output of the new album is eagerly awaited, doubt on the prevailing musical direction that would take the group. So in 2004 the band released the album American Idiot. This album is almost universally regarded as their most ambitious, since it is a rock opera (the album tells a story, that of Jesus of Suburbia), which has two songs up to 9 minutes (Jesus of Suburbia , Homecoming). Through the character of J.O.S. (Jesus Of Suburbia), the album will reflect the situation in which Americans live in after the group, and subjects of the album are varied (rebellion, depression, drugs, love, joy, anger ...). Post-American Idiot

In late 2006, Green Day collaborated with the famous Irish band U2 to return to the track The Saints Are Coming from Scottish rock band The Skids. The fruit of the sales goes directly to Music Rising, whose goal is to help rebuild (music, among others) of the region devastated by Hurricane Katrina.

Moreover, Green Day is partnering with the NRDC (National Resources Defense Council), an American defense of the environment for the development of an online website Greendaynrdc.com, to promote the protection of planet. Green Day interprets the song Working Class Hero (a cover of the song by John Lennon) to mobilize against the war in Darfur and also generic debut of The Simpsons, in which the group appears.

Billie Joe was born February 17, 1972, the youngest of a family of 6 children. His father, Andy, was a truck driver for Safeway and a jazz musician at halftime while his mother, Ollie, was a waitress in a restaurant called Rod's Hickory Pit. Billie started singing at age 5 years. He would sing at hospitals so that patients feel better. After he recorded his first CD single, Look For Love, by the local record company, Fiat Records. 5 years later his father died, September 15, 1982 of cancer esophage which is spread throughout his body. Her mother had to continue working in restaurants (a barbecue held by Richard & Alice Cotton) and to bear his children. Later he got his first electric guitar, the legendary Blue, which is the last gift from his father. The same year he met Mike in the cafeteria of his elementary school and worked as Busboys at the same restaurant as her mother. 2 years after the death of his father, Ollie remarried a man that Billy and his brothers and sisters hated.

While Billie and Mike slept in the homes of each of the tunes he played heavy metal with influences from Ozzy Osbourne, Def Leppard and Van Halen. Other influences are the Bay Area's alternative music culture during the '80s. He frequented clubs like Mabhuay Gardens & Berkeley's 924 Gilman Street. He often played local bands like Dead Kennedys and Buck Naked. He wrote his first song "Why Do You Want Him? On his mother and stepfather at age 14. At 15, he, Mike and a drummer named John form their first band Sweet Children. He gave Rod's benefits Hicktory Pit. In 1990, John leaves the group. His excuse: I want to go to university (which was true!). He needed a new drummer. John was replaced by Tré Cool. Shortly later, Sweet Children was renamed Green Day. Before they do so they were on tour with Tre's father, Frank, in a Book Mobile and people stopped to ask if they had any books to sell. They played to houses of fans. It was in Minneapolis in 1990 that Billie Joe sees for the first time the eyes of his future wife, a young woman named Adrienne Nesser. They were married July 2, 1994. Michael Ryan Pritchard, now known as Mike Dirnt, was born on May 4, 1972. Mike's mother was a heroin addict. He was given up for adoption when he was a baby, to a Native american mother and a white father. When he was 7, his adoptive parents got a divorce. Mike lived with his father for awhile, but confrontations sent him back to his mother. He lived there on the borderline of proverty, while his sister left home at the age of 13. "There were all sorts of things happening," says Mike. "When I was in fourth or fifth grade, my mom stayed out all night, came home the next day with a guy, and he moved in. I'd never met the guy before, and all of a sudden he's my stepdad. We didn't get along for years. Later on, when I hit high school, my mom moved away from us, and me and my stepdad got real close. He instilled a lot in me. The one thing my family did give me is blue-collar morals. But then he died when I was 17."

By that point, Mike had already moved out, leaving home when he was 15 to live out of his truck. He then rented a room in Billie's house, and later he lived in a punk squatter building. Billie and Mike began living for their weekends at the Gilman Street Project. Mike still continued to go to school, play in Sweet Children (which later became Green Day of course), and live on his own. He supported himself by working as a cook. Mike almost didn't graduate from high school, because his mother refused to sign one of his mandatory-attendance forms. "I took my mom aside," Mike says. "I said, 'This is how it is. You have so much shit going on in your life, so if once every semester you ask me if I've done my homework and jump all over my case, that's not right. Have I failed yet? No. And I'm going to graduate if you stay off my back. The one time in your life you chose to have morals, and it's going to fuck me up. Don't play mom once a year. It doens't fucking cut it.'" In the end, Mike did graduate from high school, and he even took more than a year's worth of courses at a community college. Then Billie and Mike moved into a squat in Oakland, California (the inspiration for "Welcome to Paradise").

Mike married his long time girlfriend Anastasia in 1996 and their daughter, Estella-Desiree was born in April 1997. Mike loves his daughter very much, and his nickname for her is "Hero". Today, Mike and Anastasia are separated, but still remain very good friends. He recently was remarried in 2004, however his wife left him because he spending too much time in the studio recording American Idiot. Mike is currently dating, and he resides in Oakland, California. He also owns a café/resturant named Rudy's Can't Fail Café, after a song by the Clash. The café is located in Emeryville, CA.

Frank Edwin Wright III was born December 9, 1972 in Frankfurt, Germany, making him the youngest member of Green Day. He lived in the Mendocino mountains, California with his dad and his 2 older siblings. His dad, a helicopter pilot in Vietnam, decided the move the family there to insulate them upon his return to the United States. Tre's closest neighbor was none other than Lookout! Records owner Lawrence Livermore, who also owned the punk band the Lookouts. At age 12, Livermore recruited Tre to join The Lookouts, and that's when Livermore gave him the name of Tre Cool (which means Very Cool in French). After Green Day's first tour around the country (following the release of 39/Smooth), John Kriftmeyer decided to leave Green Day. Looking no farther than Gilman Street, Billie Joe and Mike recruited Tre, who was already a 5 year veteran of the Gilman Street scene.

Tre decided to drop out of high school his sophmore year. However, he did pass an equivalency test and earned his GED, and he even began taking classes at a nearby community college. He had to drop out of college however, when the demands of Green Day's touring intensified. Tre's father, who owns a small trucking company, overhauled a used bookmobile, and even served as the driver on three seperate tours. "I watched them go from a bunch of kids to a group of musicians with work eithic," says Tre's father, Frank Wright. "On their first tour or two, it was more of a party than anything else. I still scratch my head and say, 'How in the hell did they make it?' They used to practice in my living room here -- a lot of the songs they did on Dookie. You hear it coming together, and you don't expect people are going to go out and buy it. But when it does, you just say, 'Wow, that's so cool.'" (Rolling Stone, January 26, 1995)

Tre had a daughter named Ramona in January of 1995, then he married his long time girlfriend Lisea Lyons in March. Him and Lisea are divorced now, but Tre remarried in May of 2000, to Claudia. Claudia and him have a son named Frankito, which means "Little Frank". Tre and Claudia divorced in 2003, but they still live together with Frankito in Oakland, California. Recently, Tre has been linked to Donna C., drummer of The Donnas, however they are no longer together.
